HSG 179 - Managing health and safety in swimming pools
This is the fourth edition of Managing health and safety in swimming pools (first published as Safety in swimming pools). The revision brings the guidance up to date with changes in health and safety law and new developments in relation to equipment and facilities.
This publication provides guidance for those who have any involvement with the operation and management of health and safety in swimming pools.
HSG 180 - Application of electro-sensitive protective equipment using light curtains and light beam devices to machinery
This guidance provides practical advice about electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) using active opto-electronic protection devices (AOPDs) for safeguarding machinery. The guidance is only relevant to ESPEs used to protect people from hazardous parts of machinery.
The book covers installation, use and inspection of protective equipment and will enable industry advisory committees, trade associations, suppliers and others to produce an installation specification.
HSG 186 - The bulk transfer of dangerous liquids and gases between ship and shore
This book provides information on the fire, explosion, toxic and environmental hazards associated with the bulk transfer of dangerous liquids and gases between ship and shore.
It sets out practical measures on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the equipment, pipelines, jetties, etc, used in the bulk transfer. These measures are designed to protect people at work (including shore staff and ships’ crews) and others who may be affected by the operations.
HSG 187 - Control of diesel engine exhaust emissions in the workplace
This guidance provides practical advice to employers and self-employed people on how to control exposure to diesel engine exhaust emissions (DEEEs) in the workplace, and so protect the health of employees and others who may be exposed. Managers, supervisors, employees, health and safety professionals, safety representatives and trade union representatives will also find this guidance useful.
The first part of the guidance shows how to assess the risk to health from exposure to DEEEs and gives a general approach to control. The second part provides examples of good working practices for controlling the engine exhaust emissions from diesel powered vehicles and also where there is likely to be an accumulation of DEEEs, such as warehouses, depots and bus garages.
HSG 190 - Preparing safety reports: Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH)
This new book gives comprehensive guidance on writing a safety report for sites containing certain quantities of dangerous substances, as required by the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH).
It explains to operators of top-tier sites (as defined under COMAH) what information needs to be provided in the safety report, and how it should be presented.
HSG 191 - Emergency planning for major accidents: Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH)
This document provides guidance for emergency planning under the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH).
The guidance is aimed at those with responsibilities for emergency planning, on-site and off-site, at major hazards establishments, including operators, local authorities, emergency services and health authorities/boards.
HSG 196 - Moving food and drink: Manual handling solutions for the food and drink industries
This book is for all employers in the food and drink industries whose work might be putting their employees’ muscles and joints at risk of damage. It shows simple and cost-effective ways of reducing both acute and chronic injuries – the solutions described were successful answers to actual problems experienced by companies.
The case studies cover raw materials handling, production, packing into containers, stacking/moving containers, handling equipment and off-site delivery.
HSG 201 - Controlling exposure to stonemasonry dust: Guidance for employers
This guidance book is aimed at employers of stonemasons, managers in stoneworking businesses, suppliers of stone, stone dust control equipment manufacturers and stone tool manufacturers and suppliers. The guidance describes the risks stonemasons face from stone dust, how to assess and control exposure and how to maintain these controls.
HSG 209 - Aircraft turnaround: A guide for airport and aerodrome operators, airlines and service providers on achieving control, co-operation and co-ordination
This guide is aimed at airport operators, airlines and companies that provide supporting services to air transport. It is relevant to directors, managers and safety representatives. It gives information on their legal obligations to co-operate and co-ordinate their health and safety efforts. In particular, it focuses on ‘aircraft turnaround’ activities, which can involve several different contractors.
HSG 217 - Involving employees in health and safety: Forming partnerships in the chemical industry
This guide is designed to help employers in the chemical industry and other industries produce healthier and safer workplaces by increasing the involvement of their workforces in all aspects of health and safety management. It shows how to plan and implement an initiative to introduce or increase workforce involvement, and each stage is supported by case studies.
The guide includes benchmarking questions which you can use in your own company to measure the existing level of involvement and pinpoint areas for improvement. It should also be of value to employee safety representatives as it shows the areas where they could be more effectively involved.
HSG219 - Managing health and safety in zoos (withdrawn - archive copy)
This guidance contains practical advice for those responsible for the operation of zoos, such as zoo operators, safety representatives and managers.
It applies to establishments of any size where wild animals are kept for exhibition to the public including aquariums, sanctuaries, bird gardens and safari parks.
Specific hazards and risks associated with zoos are covered, as well as common issues such as slips and trips, manual handling and vehicle movements.
The guidance contains recommendations on how to ensure effective arrangements for the safety, health and welfare of employees and others who might be affected by zoo work activities (eg volunteers, veterinary surgeons, contractors, the general public etc).
HSG 220 - Health and safety in care homes
Social care is a large and complex sector. Social care workers enable people – particularly those who require some extra practical and physical help – to live their lives as comfortably and independently as possible.
It is important that risks to those being cared for, and to their care workers, are sensibly and proportionately managed in ways that respect their rights, freedoms and dignity.
This guidance is intended to help those providing and managing care homes – to give them a better understanding of the real risks and how to manage them effectively. It has been extensively rewritten, with a number of new topics, and brings together key messages on risks to both workers and residents. It will also be of interest to others working in social care.
